In this wide-ranging conversation, Adler talks about cultivating dialog between at times contending ideologies, how political organizing models are shifting and how they may stay the same, and matters of race, gender and class in political movements.

During this year’s conference of the Association of Black Psychologists an important panel on the issue of African people’s sovereignty was discussed.  From the perspectives of history, economics, resources, governance, media, culture and politics panelists attempted to address the question of sovereignty and its practical definition in 2011.  What is the status of Black nationhood in the Americas? Precisely whats kinds of states or social groupings do we have today on the African continent?  And to what extent do we have or can we attain sovereignty in the 21st century?  This was a truly pan-African gathering representing the brightest efforts of the past while inspiring a revival of so many of the ideas that have caused radical fissures in Western imperial projects for centuries.  A special thanks to Dr. Mark Bolden for his work in organizing the panel.

This post was originally posted by our good friends at Vox Union on August 1, 2011.  We here at POCO felt that this powerful presentation needed to be widely distributed, thus we are aiding in this process in our own way.  We have taken the liberty to merge all of the presentations into one audio file (it can be streamed on our site, downloaded to your computer, or downloaded by subscribing to our podcast People Of Color Organize!).  The order of the presenters is provided below.  Again we want to thank Vox Union media.  Enjoy.

The idea that all nationalism, including ethnic nationalism, is bad is often rooted in anarchism, an ideology that was first propounded by European men in the nineteenth century and which since then has drawn more than its fair share of white thinkers. Even if we set this aside, white people who raise the “all nationalism is bad” objection often miss the point that the essence of ethnic nationalism has nothing to do with what anarchists mean by state and everything to do with racial or ethnic identity.  In addition host Jared Ball paid tribute to Black August and George Jackson.  For more archived shows with host Dr. Jared Ball visit Voxunion.com  (also listed on our Blogroll).</itunes:summary>
