The Rank And File Coalition is calling for New York actions in defense of education. This announcement was shared.
Based in part on a growing sense that the UFT is not doing enough to fight school closings, chapter leaders, delegates and members from seven of the 33 closing schools have called a rally to be held in front of Tweed, DOE headquarters, a week before the Public Education Panel will vote on closing their schools.
At the March Delegate Assembly, President Mulgrew stated, “Bloomberg will close more schools from now until the end of his term, than he has in the last ten years.”
A half dozen of the doomed schools received “A” or “B” on their last report cards, as well as good quality reviews. This shows no school is safe from closing now, as long as closings are accepted as policy. The UFT has no strategy to stop this.
No single rally can stop all school closings. But we must begin to rebuild our union, from the ground up, from the chapter level up. Until we do, they are just going to keep coming at us, again and again. This rally is a start.
Please join us on April 19, in front of DOE hdq, 52 Chambers Street, in Manhattan. Assemble at 4, Rally begins 4:30 pm.
