Raleigh Today: Justice for Shirley Venable

We are asking all justice minded people to join us for a picket and rally in front of the Raleigh Municipal Building, 222 West Hargett St., on Monday, March 11 from 12 noon to 1 pm and for each Monday following until further notice.

We will be calling on the Raleigh City Council and City Manager Russell Allen to reinstate Shirley Venable, a survivor of domestic violence at home and sexual harassment on the job who was falsely accused of threatening her supervisor and then fired for violation of the city workplace violence policy.

Shirley Venable had a 10 year excellent work record with the City of Raleigh and her termination is a travesty. We are raising 2 demands of the City of Raleigh.

1. That Shirley Venable be reinstated to a city job with no loss of time, benefits, or wages.

2. That the Raleigh employee grievance procedure and the Civil Service Commission (final stage of the grievance procedure) be changed to be more fair to workers who appeal grievances through the process. We have specific proposals.

The Raleigh City Council and City Manager Russell Allen can and should correct these injustices. Please pass the word and please join us in this important struggle for justice. Demonstrate your stand against sexual harassment and management abuse in the workplace by joining our weekly picket line!
