National Rally Today for Immigrant Rights

immigrant rights protest National Rally Today for Immigrant Rights

As immigrant-rights activists rally today in Washington, D.C., the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights has issued a statement on the state of immigration issues.

The network criticizes immigration reform legislation recently released by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). The “blueprint” pushes more law enforcement in communities and border enforcement  as an apparent trade off for a “tough but fair” legalization program. In addition, under the proposed scenario, educated immigrants are promised green cards while lower-skilled immigrants will be given temporary work visas, continuing the exploitation poor immigrants already face. Those with money keep their (to-be-licensed) proletarian work force, then get to ship them back when done.

Thousands of people have traveled from around the United States for today’s march, which is sponsored by dozens of community, labor and faith-based groups.
